High Availability Cluster Multi-Processing (HACMP)

In Summary

IBM High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP) has provided solutions that maintain high availability, while they make the IT environment simpler and its a solution for flexibility to respond to changing needs. IBM HACMP in brief:

  • Simple to manage yet ultra reliable
  • HACMP Clusters are now up to 32 machines
  • World-class, 24x7 clustering technology with IBM advanced systems technologies
  • Allows for cluster upgrades and system maintenance without interrupting operations
  • Offers multiple recovery and data replication methods
  • Monitors, detects and reacts to hardware and software problems
  • Can be configured to react to hundreds of system events
  • Can move services, users, applications & data to backup systems during scheduled maintenance
  • IBM HACMP is simple to configure and flexible to maintain.
  • Key to implement and meet your availability level targets
  • Significantly reduces planned and unplanned outages

Redbook

This IBM Redbook will help you install, tailor and configure the new HACMP V5.3, and understand the new and improved features like Dynamic LPAR integration, Virtual I/O, and Disaster Recovery (DR) configurations. This redbook gives a broad understanding of the HACMP and HACMP Extended Distance (HACMP/XD) architecture. If you plan to install, migrate, or merely administer a high availability cluster, this book is right for you. Disaster recovery elements and how HACMP fulfills these necessities are also presented in detail. This cookbook helps AIX professionals that are seeking a comprehensive and task-oriented guide for developing the knowledge and skills required for HACMP cluster design and implementation as well as for daily system administration. It is designed to provide a combination of theory and practical experience. This book will be especially useful for system administrators currently running both HACMP/ES and HACMP Extended Distance (XD) clusters who may want to consolidate their environment and move to a new HACMP V5.3. There is a detailed description of a node-by-node migration to HACMP/ES 5.3 and a comprehensive discussion about how to prepare for an upgrade or migration. This is the outline of the Redbook:
Part 1. Introduction

  • Introduction to HACMP
  • High availability components

Part 2. Planning, installation, and migration

  • Planning
  • Cluster installation scenarios
  • Migrating a cluster to HACMP V5.3

Part 3. Cluster scenarios and administration

  • Scenario: Adding two nodes to a cluster
  • Cluster maintenance
  • Managing your cluster
  • Cluster security

Part 4. Advanced topics (with examples)

  • Dynamic LPAR (DLPAR) and Virtualization (VIO)
  • Extending resource group capabilities
  • Customizing events
  • Storage related considerations
  • Networking
    Part 5. Disaster recovery
  • HACMP Extended distance concepts and planning
  • HACMP with cross-site LVM
  • HAGEO disaster recovery scenario
  • GLVM concepts and configuration

Hints

Do's

  • Implement a serial network
  • Perform regular testing of your clusters
  • Make sure all System Admin people are HACMP aware when making system changes
  • Plan your networks carefully
  • Take advantage of the new features such as IPAT via aliasing and fast disk takeover for fastest recovery times

Do Not's

  • Use routing on the boot subnets
  • Use more than one VLAN for each HACMP network
  • Test the parachute on the way down !!
